Newcastle Brown

Representing Newcastle University Sailing & Yachting Club

Bib/ID: LB

Newcastle Brown arrive at BUCS Team Racing Finals as a product of one of the largest, loudest, and most questionably organised sailing programmes in the country. Forged in the chaos of a multi-team club where boats are rarely all functional and someone’s only one roll tack away from chunning, Brown have spent the past year turning that chaos into something that occasionally resembles very competent team racing. Their season has been a full tour of the UK circuit: early mornings, late nights, long drives, and a healthy mix of strong performances and “character-building experiences.” From northern staples to the bigger national events, Newcastle Brown have built a reputation for being consistently awkward to beat—never quite going away in a race, and always one slightly annoying manoeuvre away from flipping the result. On the water, Brown pride themselves on playing their own brand team racing… or at least something recognisable as it. Expect mystery mark traps, persistent (and sometimes wildly optimistic) conversions, and a level of communication that ranges from calm and tactical to full-volume Newcastle. They’re not afraid to get stuck in, and while it doesn’t always look pretty, it’s usually enough to make life difficult for whoever they’re up against. There have also been whispers in the boat park about a certain competitive advantage this year, with Isobel Hedley-Fenn allegedly doing her best to rig the event in Newcastle’s favour—purely coincidentally, of course, as Nat’s girlfriend. Whether this translates into favourable draws, perfectly timed wind shifts, or just moral support from the shore remains to be seen, but Newcastle Brown will certainly be backing it. Off the water, the team fully lean into the social side of university sailing. Their philosophy is simple: drink you under the table, sail you off the course. Whether or not those happen in that order is anyone’s guess, but they approach both with equal commitment. Coming into Finals, Newcastle Brown are here to cause problems. They won’t give anything away easily, they’ll take any opportunity they’re given, and they’ll make sure every race is properly fought. At the very least, they guarantee entertaining racing—for themselves and for anyone unlucky enough to line up against them. I met my love by the gas works wall Dreamed a dream by the old canal I kissed my girl by the factory wall Dirty old town Dirty old town Clouds are drifting across the moon Cats are prowling on their beat Spring's a girl from the streets at night Dirty old town Dirty old town I heard a siren from the docks Saw a train set the night on fire I smelled the spring on the smoky wind Dirty old town Dirty old town I'm gonna make me a good sharp axe Shining steel tempered in the fire I'll chop you down like an old dead tree Dirty old town Dirty old town I met my love by the gas works wall Dreamed a dream by the old canal I kissed my girl by the factory wall Dirty old town Dirty old town Dirty old town Dirty old town
